Heritage and Divine destinations of  Visakhapatnam are very famous and oldest structures in which some are constructed in during Buddhist time. Buddhist Heritage spots in Visakhapatnam are Bavikonda and Thotlakonda. The Divine destinations in Visakhapatnam are Simhachalm temple, Kali temple, Dargah Sharif etc.


Meaning of the term Bavikonda (Telugu term) is Hill of wells situated 15KM from Visakhapatnam is a significant Buddhist site. It is one of the oldest and sacred Buddhist site present in Asia considered as the both Heritage and Divine Destinations . The name Bavikonda itself is explaining the site has wells which are useful for the collection of rain water i.e., rain water harvesting. During Archaeologist search in 1980’s ,revealed an entire Buddhist establishment contains a stone pillared congregation hall, rectangular halls, numerous stupas etc. The artefacts revealed from the site includes Satavahana and Roman coins and pottery of 3rd Century BC and a  piece of bone stored in a container which are believed to be mortal remains of the Buddha and also a large quantity of ash.

A Buddhist complex located on the top of a hill is situated 16 KM from Visakhapatnam spreads over app.120 acres area. Even it has been declared as a protected monument by Government of Andhra Pradesh. Artifacts revealed three kinds of structural remains which are religious, civil an secular types. The main artefact discovered are mahastupa ,stone pillared congregation hall, paved stone path ways ,a kitchen complex with three halls, votive stupas etc., Not only the structures but also the satavahana and roman silver coins, decorative pieces, sculptured panels, terracotta tiles.

Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha swami temple (Simhachalam temple)
It is a South Indian Hindu Temple constructed on the Simhachalam hill which is present 800 meters above the sea level and one of the 32 Narasimha temples in Andhra Pradesh Temple. It is located ten miles to the north of Visakhapatnam had well transport facilities by APSRTC or you can go by your own vehicles .In terms of income earned, Simhachalam temple is second largest temple after Tirumala in Andhra Pradesh. Temple is dedicated to Vishnu worshipped here as Varaha Narasimha Swami. Throughout Year except on Akshaya Tritiya idol of varaha Narasimha swami is covered with sandalwood paste which resembles like Shiva lingam.

Dargah Sharif
It is located in One Town of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The Full name is Sayed Ali Ishaq Madani Aulia Rahmatullah Alaihi Dargah Sharif. Before 1000 years Visakhapatnam was called as Ishaq Patnam.

Dutch Cementary
It was the place of Soldiers memorials those who died during the French War. It is located near the RK beach in the west of the Visakhapatnam. In Cementary ,52 tombs are spread across two locations among them 15 are stone capped in which 5 are inscriptions in Dutch language which are even visible today. The earliest is considered as one of the pyramid shaped grave of Federick Kesslerus who died in October 8,1661.Cementary is divided into two parts whereas the entering to the right is for British people and the rest of the area or Dutch people.

Hawa mahal
Hawa mahal is a masonry building constructed in between the years 1917 and 1923 near beach road in Visakhapatnam. Earlier it is used as summer residence of Jeypore kings of Odisha.It is a two-storied rectangular structure which is still in great condition hence it is hosting several art exhibitions etc. Currently renovation works are going to keep the heritage significance of the building alive.

Kali temple
This temple is constructed in 1984 near RK beach which is a architectural resemblance of a kali temple in Kolkata. Temple comprises an office and a quarter for the priest and kitchen for preparing prasadh. Just beside of the temple there is Shiva temple ,the uniqueness of this temple is ‘rasalinga’ which is prepared from a single stone weighs 10KG.
